Have you ever paused to consider what the sound of your house keys jingling in your pocket really means? And what that same sound might mean to someone who doesn’t have a home at all?
This isn’t strictly a decorating post. It’s an invitation to take a few minutes to learn about Habitat for Humanity’s annual Home Is Key campaign and why it matters. The simple sound of keys can represent safety, stability and dignity — things many families lack when they do not have a decent, affordable place to live. Imagine the day-to-day reality for a family without a stable home: constant uncertainty about where they will sleep, anxiety about covering basic needs, and the stress of juggling limited income against rising housing costs. Stable housing changes that picture. It creates opportunities — better access to health care, improved school performance for children, and a chance to build long-term financial stability.
Why affordable housing matters
- Housing cost burden is widespread: one in six families in the United States — nearly 19 million people — spend half or more of their income on housing. That leaves families forced to choose between rent or mortgage payments and essentials such as nutritious food, transportation, or necessary medicine.
- Wages and housing costs are out of sync in many places. There is virtually no part of the U.S. where a full-time, minimum-wage worker can afford a one-bedroom apartment, and in 34 states plus the District of Columbia a single person working two minimum-wage jobs still cannot afford a two-bedroom unit.
- When families have affordable, stable homes, children tend to be healthier and do better in school. Homeownership and stable housing reduce emergency room visits for routine health issues and support consistent educational outcomes.
- Affordable housing frees up income for other essentials. When housing costs are reasonable, families can spend more on healthy food, medical care, transportation, and other investments that improve quality of life.
- Habitat for Humanity is one of the largest providers of affordable housing, focused on building strength, stability and self-reliance through shelter.
- The Home Is Key campaign showcases how a decent, affordable home can transform lives and build stronger communities.
How you can help
- Make a monetary donation directly to Habitat for Humanity by visiting Habitat.org/homeisthekey.
- Donate at a Habitat for Humanity ReStore when you check out — many ReStores accept contributions at the register.
- Support campaign partners: during campaign periods, participating retailers and brands donate a portion of sales from select items — for example, donations are made for certain coaster sets, spray mops, apparel items, and gift card purchases.
- Spread the word on social media. Some partners contribute for each qualified social share using the campaign tag during the promotion window.
- Support sustainability-focused initiatives: partners may provide energy-saving technologies and other resources that help make homes affordable to operate as well as to buy.
