Although winter has its own quiet beauty, it’s not my favorite season. It’s cold, and I find myself craving warm blankets, a cozy spot, and a steaming mug of cocoa. To make our home more inviting throughout the colder months, I scatter cozy touches throughout the house—and this year I took the family room up a notch with a rustic, layered gallery wall that really transformed the space.
If you’re new here, a bit of background: my husband and I bought an outdated mid-90s house a little over a year ago and have been renovating it room by room. We’ve already refreshed the farmhouse kitchen, the breakfast area, and the laundry room, and the family room remodel is nearly finished. The gallery wall above the sofa is one of those finishing touches that makes the room feel purposeful and snug.
When I first started working on this wall it felt a little sparse. The clock looked out of place and the arrangement didn’t read as cohesive.

The first change that made an immediate difference was moving the clock and replacing it with a fiddle leaf fig print that had previously hung on the other side of the room. That swap established a stronger focal point, and then I layered additional elements to give the wall depth, texture, and a welcoming, rustic feel.
Many of the original framed pieces stayed in place, but I added a few new handmade accents. One of my favorite additions is a DIY rustic ladder leaned against the wall, draped with chunky throws and a winter scarf. It’s an inexpensive, easy project that instantly reads cozy and functional.
To add softness and interest, I crafted a couple of chunky yarn tassels. I finished them with jute twine ties to reinforce the rustic vibe—the contrast of natural twine with the thick yarn gives the tassels a casual, handmade look that fits the room.
Another standout piece is an old wooden shutter I found at a local architectural salvage shop. It’s from a house built long ago and still shows the original handmade nails and hardware. I repaired it with carpenter’s glue where needed, and hung a twig wreath on it to add texture and a touch of organic warmth.
I wanted the wall to feel personal and uplifting, so I added a small chalkboard-style sign that reads “Count Your Blessings.” Instead of simply hanging it from a hook, I used eye screws and suspended it from jute twine so it feels a bit more intentional and layered with the other wall elements.
Beyond the wall itself, adding a DIY sofa table behind the couch had a major impact on the room’s scale and comfort. The table pulls the seating area inward, reduces the empty space in the center of the room, and provides a surface for lamps and small vignette displays. This simple furniture addition makes the whole family room feel cozier and more intentionally arranged.
With the table in place, I added more lighting on that side of the room—a lamp and a few decorative accents—which helped take the space from dim and cavernous to warm and welcoming.
Our family room is generous in size, which is wonderful but also challenging to furnish. Pushing the sofa against the wall had left the room feeling disconnected. The console table moves the sofa off the wall just enough to create a more intimate arrangement, while the layered gallery wall and lantern vignette bring texture and seasonal interest.
I finished the vignette with a tall lantern on the console table, a small snow-dusted evergreen pulled from my winter decor, and a few carefully placed accessories. These simple choices reinforce the room’s cozy mood without feeling cluttered.
This refreshed gallery wall and the addition of the sofa table have completed the look for this side of the family room. Now I love settling onto the couch under a soft blanket, enjoying the glow of a warm fire and the layered textures that make the space feel like home.
