My Laundry Room Reveal — A Bright, Organized Makeover

After months of starts and stops, I’m thrilled to share the finished laundry room reveal. This remodel turned a neglected, cluttered space into a bright, functional laundry room that makes chores easier and even a little enjoyable. To appreciate the change, here’s what the room looked like when we first toured the house. The space was a mess, but it had great potential—the footprint is generous for a laundry area, and I couldn’t wait to start planning a functional layout that included storage, a sink, and workspace.

During the renovation we removed wallpaper, replaced flooring, relocated some plumbing, and installed cabinets repurposed from the home’s original kitchen. Progress paused for a while as we worked through cabinet and countertop details, and life intervened with other projects, but eventually everything came together. We even kept the previous owner’s fridge in the room because it’s useful—especially during holidays.

And here is the finished space. The remodel brightened and organized the room, creating a much more pleasant place to do laundry. The after photos are shown in close angles so you can see the details and the practical solutions we used to maximize storage and function in this laundry room remodel.

This laundry room includes several DIY projects that improved both appearance and utility. One project was a rustic open shelf built to conceal an awkward 12-inch gap behind the washer and dryer caused by the dryer vent location. Another was a custom solution to hide the faucet connections in the wall—those hookups can be a visual distraction, and a simple cover box keeps the wall looking clean and finished. You can see the white cover box tucked beside the washer in the photos.

A small wire basket on the shelf holds dryer sheets for easy access so I don’t have to reach into a high cabinet. Most detergents and cleaning supplies are stored inside the cabinets, but keeping everyday items within reach makes laundry tasks faster and more efficient. Thoughtful storage like this is a key part of successful laundry room design.

Opposite the washer and dryer is the laundry sink and counter area. The gray circular object to the left of the cabinets is a retractable clothesline that I stretch across the room and clip to a sturdy hook when needed. It’s perfect for air-drying multiple items at once and is a simple addition that increases flexibility in a laundry room.

This sink also doubles as a dog-washing station. I store dog shampoos and brushes in a fabric bin beside the sink, and a glass canister inside the bin holds squeaky toys for easy access during baths. Rotating toys keeps the dogs entertained and makes bath time smoother—another practical detail for pet owners planning a laundry room remodel.

On the wall to the right of the sink hangs an oversized bulletin board repurposed from another room. To give it a farmhouse-inspired look and make it a functional display, I removed the cork board, stapled twine across the frame’s back, and reinstalled the board so notes and photos can be clipped to the twine with small clothespins. It’s a simple DIY that adds character and keeps essentials visible.

Running twine across a framed board and using clothespins makes a charming, changeable display for cards, reminders, and photos—perfect for a multipurpose laundry room where organization meets style.

Across from the sink I installed an easy ironing board hanger. It’s simply a stained wood board with two hooks mounted to the front; this keeps the board off the floor and neatly stored. When building one, be sure the hook openings fit the legs of your ironing board. I also refreshed the cover with a modern black-and-white pattern for a clean look—an inexpensive update that elevates the room’s style.
