Our family serves this casserole every holiday season. The recipe is simple, dependable, and easy to scale for larger gatherings. I’m always allowed to add new dishes, but taking items off the menu is strictly forbidden—so this one stays on the list!

It’s a Dessert-Like Side Dish

The crunchy pecan and brown sugar topping gives this casserole a sweet, dessert-like finish that complements roast turkey, ham or any rich main course. The balance of sweet and buttery textures makes it a popular option for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter or any special meal.

This side is both festive and versatile: impressive enough for holiday dinners but simple enough for a cozy Sunday supper.

Make Ahead and Storage Tips

This casserole can be assembled up to two days in advance and refrigerated unbaked, which makes it ideal for busy holiday schedules. When you’re ready to bake, allow it to sit at room temperature for 30–45 minutes before placing it in a preheated oven to ensure even baking.

I don’t recommend freezing this dish; freezing can alter the texture of the sweet potatoes. Leftovers, however, reheat very well in the microwave and keep for several days in the refrigerator.

Convenience and Portioning

This recipe uses canned, precooked sweet potatoes, which makes it extremely convenient—no need to bake or boil potatoes ahead of time. The finished casserole fits a 9 x 13-inch dish and serves about eight people. For larger gatherings, simply double the recipe and split between two pans.

Because it reheats so well, I often make an extra pan to keep as leftovers. The rich topping stays crisp and the filling stays creamy when reheated properly.

Sweet potatoes are naturally sweet and versatile. I enjoy them baked with butter and salt, sliced in casseroles, or mashed with warm spices. This particular casserole, with its crunchy pecan topping, has been a favorite for years and is often requested by family and friends.
