How I’m transforming our very traditional master bedroom into a refreshed, updated-traditional space with a new bed, fresh linens and a fresh coat of paint.

After months of stopping and starting, the master bedroom makeover is finally moving forward. Life pulled my attention in many directions—summer projects, fall transitions and then the holidays—so this room sat untouched for eight months. Now the refresh is back on track and it’s the first of the projects we plan to complete this year.
When I last updated you in June 2019, we’d already checked several major boxes: a new upholstered bed, new bedding, a bench at the foot of the bed and a much-needed new dresser and chest. Since then, I’ve focused on the finishing details—painting, hardware, lighting and styling—to bring the room from traditional to updated-traditional while keeping a calm, neutral palette.
For a while I was debating whether to wallpaper an accent wall. The mirror had been propped against the wall with wallpaper samples taped around it while I weighed the options. Ultimately I decided against a full wallpaper accent wall, but I still love the paper and will use a small amount of it elsewhere in the room.
One small but noticeable step was removing and later repainting the nightstand hardware. I didn’t get to the painting right away and my husband gently reminded me—repeatedly—that the drawers needed knobs. The delay was worth it: the nightstands now have a refined finish that complements the rest of the room.
After much indecision about color, I finally settled on a shade for the nightstands that harmonizes with the neutral tones throughout the space. I paired them with new lamps that instantly elevated the bedside vignette. The hardware may still be a work in progress for me, but I love the lamps—both for their style and value.
The dresser was a major focal point that changed the whole feel of the room after I hung the mirror and added wall sconces on either side. The round mirror and brass sconces add balance and warmth, creating a more intentional and layered look over the dresser.
The progress so far has been gratifying and visible. The room now feels brighter and more cohesive while keeping its traditional bones. I’ve focused on neutral textiles, layered lighting and carefully chosen finishes to achieve an updated-traditional look that feels both fresh and timeless.

The next focus will be the bay window seating area. Installing window treatments and updating the light fixture there will be a noticeable, dramatic change. It’s one of those jobs I’m not thrilled to tackle, but I know the payoff will be worth it.
