How to make your kitchen shelves both functional and simple to refresh for fall—or any season. Includes an easy fall centerpiece idea.

I’ll be honest: I grew tired of redecorating the open shelves in my breakfast room and kitchen several times a year. After years of inventing new looks each season, I decided to simplify. The goal became clear—make the shelves practical, attractive, and easy to tweak for each season, especially for fall.
Welcome to my contribution to the Brilliant Colors Of Fall Home Tours hosted by The Tattered Pew and This Is Simplicite. I’m Suzy, an empty nester in North Carolina, sharing simple, approachable seasonal decorating ideas for everyday homes.
We remodeled our home about six years ago, and over the last few years I’ve been slowly refreshing rooms: the master bedroom, master bathroom, home office and dining room are all on my list. If you enjoy seasonal decor and practical styling ideas, follow along for updates and occasional tips.
When I added open shelves to our breakfast room about five years ago, I found myself redoing them four or five times a year—nearly twenty different looks over time. That’s a lot of styling energy, and it finally led me to a new approach: build a neutral, functional foundation that I can seasonally accent.

Here’s the simple system I landed on for fall shelf decor and year-round open shelf styling:
- Start with a cohesive base—I gathered mostly white dishes, bowls, pitchers and serving pieces so the shelves read crisp and uniform.
- Use the shelves for functional storage—moving some cabinet items onto the open shelves freed space inside my cabinets while keeping everything handy and pretty.
- Add a few seasonal accents—introduce small fall elements like pumpkins, dried stems, or warm-toned accents that can be swapped out easily without a full restyle.
Because the core of my shelving is neutral white, seasonal pieces stand out and the overall look stays fresh without constant overhauls. Wooden cutting boards and natural textures give an autumnal feel but aren’t strictly seasonal, so they stay on the shelves year-round.

For a tabletop focal point, I created a simple fall centerpiece that adds height and color. Instead of a store-bought riser, I made one from leftover boards, fastening them together on the back, adding small feet, and staining the wood. It’s an inexpensive, handmade base that elevates the display and gives dimension to the table vignette.

On the centerpiece riser I arranged green bottles for color, terra cotta pots for texture, a few white candles, and springy faux stems for a natural look. I finished the display by placing a few small pumpkins around the arrangement—classic fall without feeling overdone.

A few final tips for quick seasonal shelf updates:
- Keep a neutral base of dishes and decor so seasonal pieces pop.
- Limit seasonal accents to a handful of items—less is more and makes changes fast.
- Use functional items (serveware, cutting boards, pitchers) as decor to reduce clutter elsewhere.
