Spring Farmhouse Front Porch and Easy Planters
When spring arrives, the first thing I do is rush outside to refresh my porch and plant containers. Over the past week I’ve washed away layers of pollen, swept cobwebs from corners, and filled the planters that frame my farmhouse-style front door. The result is a clean, welcoming entry that feels both classic and effortless.
Welcome to the April edition of Farmhouse Friday. This month I joined a group of farmhouse-loving friends to focus on farmhouse planters and porch styling. Our collective projects celebrate simple, tailored outdoor decor that enhances curb appeal without fussiness or clutter.

Simple, Tailored Planters
To me, farmhouse style doesn’t require an overabundance of accessories. On the porch I prefer clean, groomed lines and a few well-placed containers rather than a crowded assortment of knickknacks. Two matching urns flanking the door create a balanced, inviting entry that reads timeless and tidy.

The urns hold boxwoods shaped to a neat form, paired with green-and-white ivy and polka dot plants. This combination gives structure from the boxwoods, trailing interest from the ivy, and a lively pop of color from the polka dot plants. On a shady porch like mine, these selections provide year-round texture and seasonal brightness.

Mixing Textures and Color
I picked up smaller textured gray pots at a local home improvement store — their simple surface adds subtle interest without competing with the house’s architectural details. To help the pots fill in quickly, I planted four impatiens in each: three fuchsia and one white with a fuchsia center. This clustered planting creates immediate fullness and a cheerful spot of color on the porch.

DIY Wreath and Personalized Touches
A handmade seed packet wreath hangs on the door — a quick, charming DIY that adds a seasonal accent and reinforces the gardening theme. The natural paper textures and muted colors of seed packets work beautifully with farmhouse aesthetics, keeping the look casual yet intentional.

Another finishing touch is a customized wooden plaque I ordered from a small artisan. I had the plaque made with the letters HOH — short for House Of Handgraaf — and the year 2005, the year my husband and I were married. The plaque adds a personal, handmade feel that complements the porch’s farmhouse character.

Enjoying the Results
After the cleanup and planting, I like to sit on the porch with a glass of iced sweet tea and take in the view. A simple arrangement of planters and a few thoughtful accents are all it takes to make an inviting farmhouse front entry that feels pulled together without being overdone.

If you’re planning your own spring porch refresh, consider focusing on balance and texture: a pair of statement planters, a mix of evergreen and seasonal plants, and a few personal accents like a handmade wreath or a wooden plaque. These elements create curb appeal and a welcoming first impression without overwhelming the space.
