A cozy Christmas decorating ideas tour of our foyer and family room with updated traditional holiday decor inspiration you can recreate at home
Christmas decorating is really a collection of small, meaningful moments. Whether you prefer minimalist touches, a maximalist look, or something in between, each ornament, ribbon and vignette adds personality and forms the story of the season in your home.
All those little moments come together to shape the overall decorating style and the holiday atmosphere. This year at Worthing Court I focused on a cozy cottage theme and worked to weave that feeling through both the foyer and the family room.

I’ve divided my tour into two posts so I can show several rooms without making a single post too long. For this first part, come in through the front door and follow me around the foyer and family room.
One small change this year was adding a garland to the staircase—a simple update that increases the cozy, welcoming feel of the entry. The base is a pre-lit evergreen garland attached with black zip ties, then layered with flocked pine and red berry picks for texture and color.
This year I mixed blue into my usual red palette. A striped silk ribbon in blue, red and green pulls the colors together and gives a fresh, cottage-y twist to traditional holiday hues.
Normally I have two small benches flanking the office opening. This year I removed them to create more breathing room and to add different seasonal elements.
On one side I installed a coat rack and filled it with holiday accents—a red coat, a tartan scarf, a Merry Christmas sign, a wreath and a long basket overflowing with greenery and berries. A tall woven basket beside it balances the vignette and fills vertical space.
On the opposite side I placed a slim flocked tree and decorated it simply: blue and white origami stars, red cardinals, and a few blue velvet picks at the top. The goal was to guide the eye from the front door through to the family room and to unify the color story.
To save floor space in the doorway, I removed the tree stand and nestled the tree inside a basket. I anchored it discreetly by stuffing towels around the base—an easy trick when you don’t have room for a tree skirt.
My husband thought the tree’s spot was unconventional, but I love how it draws visitors into the family room and ties the entryway and living space together.
In the family room the larger tree continues the same palette—blue and white with carefully placed pops of red. I kept the red accents minimal so the scheme reads seasonal rather than patriotic.
The tree sits beside the fireplace, so the mantel and hearth needed to speak the same visual language. I used the same striped ribbon here, along with oversized red ornaments and blue-and-white candlesticks that bring a playful, cottage charm to the vignette.
Beside the fireplace is a favorite cozy nook: a recliner that catches the afternoon sun through the French doors. It’s a perfect reading spot on chilly evenings. Across from the fireplace the couch is my preferred place to curl up, where I can enjoy both the fire and the TV on cold nights.
