After twelve years of blogging and trying many color schemes, I’ve returned to a refreshed take on my traditional red and green Christmas — and this year is my favorite so far.

My tree sits so it’s the first thing you see when you enter the front door, so I build it as the focal point of the room. I usually spread the work across several days, starting with the topper and working downward.
This year’s palette is classic red and green with touches of gold. Starting with a statement topper helps set the mood and guides the rest of the design.
My topper mixes oversized ornaments arranged diagonally, red velvet berry picks, and layered ribbons. It’s an easy technique that delivers a bold, polished look.
After the topper, I add larger ornaments and unexpected elements, then fill in with medium and small ornaments. Feature ornaments are placed where they’ll be most visible, and ribbon and picks are used last to tie everything together.
The primary ribbon is a luxe green with a red stripe backed in gold, which pairs beautifully with vintage brass ornaments I inherited from my mother—special pieces I place prominently on branch tips so they catch the eye.

I combined four different ribbons on the tree: the green-and-red stripe, a wide red velvet, a 2″ tartan wired ribbon, and a 1″ red velvet used for small bows. Layering ribbon widths and textures creates depth and a handcrafted feel.
You don’t need to buy more ornaments to refresh your decor. Coordinate your gift wrap with the tree instead. I use several plaid patterns in coordinating colors, which creates a cohesive, layered look around the base of the tree.
My fireplace sits beside the tree, so I treat it as an extension of the display. The mantel garland is three garlands wired together: a doubled flocked base with two additional garlands layered on top, then accented with the same picks used in the tree to tie both areas together.
I added red mercury glass trees on the mantel to introduce reflective color and scale; they were a great sale find and will be useful in new vignettes next year as well.
A flocked wreath on my round mirror completes the mantel, and I hung a few ornaments from the same ribbon used on the tree for a playful, cohesive touch.
On the coffee table I simply layered seasonal accents over existing decor: coffee table books form a base for candles and a bowl of frosted cranberries for an easy, elegant vignette.
One more fun find: a large Fitz & Floyd Santa I recently added. He was on sale, and while he’s an investment, he’s a piece I’ll enjoy for years and hope to pass to my daughter someday.
