I’m officially done with the old habit of redecorating every inch of the house for each season. That was fun once, but now I prefer a simpler, smarter approach.
Instead of overhauling everything, I focus on small, intentional changes that add seasonal warmth without overwhelming the space.
I follow two simple rules:
- Resist filling every surface.
- Incorporate seasonal touches into the decor I already have.
When I say DIY fall decorations, I don’t mean complicated crafts. I mean affordable, do-it-yourself updates—nothing custom-ordered or wildly expensive. A few well-chosen stems, pillows, or a bowl of faux fruit can make a big seasonal impact on a modest budget.
So grab a pumpkin spice latte and enjoy a tour filled with approachable ideas and lots of photos for inspiration.

If you visited last year’s fall tour or the year before, you’ll notice our main floor has changed a lot. A breakfast nook makeover sparked a larger refresh across most first-floor rooms.
The rooms are still a work in progress, but that hasn’t stopped me from adding easy fall touches along the way.
This post is part fall tour, part update on the changes we’ve made—come on in and I’ll show you around.
Simple Fall in the Foyer
For uncomplicated fall decorating, faux stems are my go-to. They look fresh year after year and are perfect for adding seasonal color without fuss.
A few faux leaf and berry stems arranged in a blue-and-white ginger jar plus a decorative bowl of faux pears were all it took to introduce fall into the foyer.
Using faux florals is an easy way to nod to the season without over-decorating—simple, tasteful, and budget-friendly.
I swapped a mirror for a piece of wall art and added a vase on a decorative bracket. Eventually I’ll paint the chest and change the hardware—perhaps green and gold—but I haven’t decided yet.
Fall Around the Living Room
As you step into the living room from the foyer, you might notice the floor—some boards are recently replaced but not yet finished due to a burst pipe. Home projects aside, we used the opportunity to rearrange the room.
We swapped the entertainment center and couch, added two chairs, and shifted the layout to create a more conversational seating area.
My husband and I have become thrift-store and consignment-shop enthusiasts, and during one outing we found a beautiful divider screen that fits perfectly above the couch. It felt like instant love the moment we hung it.
The rest of the wall still needs something, but for now I’m enjoying the mix of color and texture the screen provides.
Velvet throw pillows in burnt orange pair beautifully with floral fall pillows to add warmth and a smooth transition from summer to autumn.
I borrowed a round table from upstairs to better fill a corner near the French doors; I’ll share a step-by-step tutorial soon for making a corded-edge tablecloth to dress it up.
Several pieces—like the coffee table and an end table—were finds from Facebook Marketplace. With a little restoration they regained their rich wood tones and now complement the room nicely.
To keep the decorating easy, I left most of the room intact and swapped only a few accessories: faux mums in the large blue-and-white bowl, a ceramic pumpkin on a stack of books, and a leaf dish filled with small pinecones on the coffee table.
Fireplace updates were modest: I kept leafy twigs and fall-colored stems on the mantel, moved a few accessories, added mini pumpkins, and replaced a boxwood orb with birch logs in the brass urn on the hearth for a more seasonal feel.
Although it’s a gas fireplace, the logs and tools add a traditional touch I like—even if I’ve considered switching the glass doors for a screen at some point.
A new area rug—an antelope-style design we had custom made—adds luxury and modern flair to balance the room’s traditional pieces. We also replaced older recliners with more comfortable, better-looking ones that suit the updated space.
Many of the other pieces—chest, lamp, and a small table—were thrifted or purchased on Marketplace, which keeps the overall budget friendly and eclectic.
Two floral-upholstered armchairs we found at consignment really inspired the room’s refresh. They introduced pattern and color and gave us a cozy new seating corner that might even become our Christmas tree spot.
To keep things simple for fall, I switched only a few accessories on the entertainment center—added faux pumpkins, a bit of foliage, and layered small seasonal accents to the shelves.
I made a small arrangement using stems from my stash in an aged brass container to create a charming fall vignette beside one chair.
Adding Fall to the Breakfast Room
The living room opens to the breakfast room/kitchen, and the plate rack there is a focal point I change seasonally. This year a few Imari-inspired plates I found at a consignment shop inspired the palette.
A few accent plates are enough—paired with orange accents and mini pumpkins, they create a clear and inviting autumn look without overdoing it.
I coordinated the table centerpiece with the plate rack, using burnt-orange blooms and a bowl of bright green apples to create a crisp, seasonal contrast that catches the eye when you enter the room.
Elegant Fall Decor in the Dining Room
The dining room has undergone several updates and still has plans in store. A solid mahogany table and chairs we found for a great price anchored the space and set the tone for a refined, traditional look.
I kept a paneled accent wall and added faux grasscloth wallpaper to the remaining walls for texture and depth.
For an elegant fall centerpiece I used antique-look candlesticks, dried hydrangeas in a cachepot, and a decorative bowl of berries and a candle—simple pieces that feel classic and layered.
Many of the room’s accessories were scored at consignment shops. I plan to paint the mirror blue to add a pop of color and will likely paint a gray chest white with new hardware in the future.
I also found a piece of wall art on sale that I plan to flank with collected plates and brackets once I decide where to place them on the wallpapered wall.
A new light fixture, rug, and draperies are part of the plan, and I already have fabric ready—stay tuned to see how the final color scheme comes together.
