Traditional Christmas Living Room Decor Ideas

Ideas for a traditional Christmas living room that blends classic red-and-green tartan plaid with elegant blue-and-white chinoiserie accents, creating a warm, timeless holiday look.

Imagine stepping into a living room at Christmas that feels like a welcoming embrace—cozy, elegant, and thoughtfully layered. Here, traditional holiday colors meet refined chinoiserie details: tartan ribbon and plaid ornaments pair with blue-and-white ceramics to give the space both warmth and sophistication.

I chose a classic theme centered on red and green tartan plaid and accented it with blue-and-white chinoiserie pieces. The result is festive without feeling overdone—balanced layers of pattern, texture, and traditional color that keep the room feeling grounded and inviting.

TIP: Red and green are the most iconic traditional Christmas colors. Adding blue and white accents refreshes the palette and introduces an elegant contrast.

This year I’m again participating in the Bloggers’ Best Christmas Home Tour, hosted by Kelly of The Tattered Pew. Several talented bloggers are sharing festive home tours this week, and I’m happy to be part of the lineup.

If you’re arriving from StoneGable, welcome—thanks for stopping by. I love Yvonne’s impeccable styling year-round and appreciate the inspiration she shares.

Welcome to my living room, dressed for the holidays. After a recent water leak required repairs and floor refinishing, we rearranged the first floor, which gave me the perfect opportunity to rethink the furniture placement and refresh the decor.

The new arrangement and my evolving decorating preferences have nudged the room back toward a traditional style—after a couple years of farmhouse influences, I’ve returned to the classic look I love. There are still projects in progress, such as window treatments, but the room already feels refreshed.

One fun discovery during the redecoration: consignment shopping has become a favorite pastime for both of us. We found many of the room’s treasures at local consignment shops and on marketplace sites—so much of the look is curated rather than brand-new.

The only new purchases in this room are the blue recliners and a much-loved antelope rug. Everything else came from my existing collection, a consignment find, or a marketplace purchase.

This season I simplified the decorations, resisting the urge to cover every surface. By keeping many everyday pieces in place and layering in holiday touches—red berries, magnolia stems, a few ornaments—the room feels festive yet lived-in.

On the mantel, a pair of blue-and-white vases and Staffordshire dogs remain, now filled with red berries and magnolia for a seasonal update. A small boxwood wreath tied with red ribbon hangs on a large ginger jar, carrying the color to the hearth while staying restrained and classic.

TIP: Use plain or neutral ornaments to calm areas that are dominated by a single color—this helps the eye rest and keeps the overall palette cohesive.

The coffee table styling remained mostly the same; I simply swapped faux mums for magnolia leaves and evergreen branches in a central blue-and-white bowl and added a couple of Christmas dishes. The arrangement complements a decorative screen behind the sofa, visible when entering from the kitchen and breakfast area.

And of course, there’s a Christmas tree. I moved the tree to a new corner between the entertainment center and console table, which improves both the flow of the room and photography angles compared with its former spot in front of French doors.

The tree sits in a large chinoiserie urn—a splurge I plan to use year-round, as it also works beautifully with large plants. Decorating the tree started with the topper, a tip I picked up from tree-decorating experts: once the topper is in place, the rest of the design flows naturally.

Ornaments range from chinoiserie-style pieces to small Churchill Blue Willow saucers hung on plate hangers—scored affordably at consignment—and a mix of ornaments from craft stores and my own stash. The tree’s palette and pattern cues came from tartan plaid ribbon and large plaid ornaments, which I used as a starting point.

Beneath the tree, chinoiserie wrapping paper ties the whole look together—small pagodas and classic patterns echo the blue-and-white accents used throughout the room. To make the transition from tree to living room seamless, I used everyday decor items around the base so the tree feels integrated into the overall scheme.

TIP: Bring the tree into the room’s design by using regular decor pieces around the base—this connects the holiday display to your everyday style.

Thank you for touring my traditional Christmas living room. I hope these ideas—tartan ribbon, chinoiserie accents, consignment finds, and simple layering—spark inspiration for your own holiday decorating.

Wishing you and your loved ones a Merry Christmas filled with warmth and joy as you celebrate the season and the gift of Christ’s birth.
