New Front Door for a Spring Farmhouse Entry

Come see my front entry refresh with a new front door and a beautiful suburban farmhouse feel!

Spring always gets me thinking about porches and planters. Although it’s still a touch early here in central North Carolina to plant for real, I’m deep into planning and porch prep. This weekend I’ll be tidying pine straw beds, sweeping and washing the porch and furniture so everything is ready for the warmer days ahead. Of course, pollen season will mean I’ll repeat some of this cleaning once the trees start shedding, but the crisp, clean baseline is worth it.

For this week’s highlight from The Best of Worthing Court, I’m revisiting last year’s front entry makeover. When we first bought the house and began the remodel, the original door looked tired and in need of a good cleaning. At that point I had no idea Pookie would surprise me with a brand new door for my birthday the following year. I snapped this “before” photo while gearing up to freshen it up.

And here is the new door—stylish, welcoming and already dressed for spring. The change is instant and dramatic; a fresh front door really anchors the whole porch aesthetic and raises curb appeal immediately.

My approach to a farmhouse look leans toward clean, tailored lines rather than cluttered or fussy decor. For the front entry I kept the design intentional and simple: a few well-chosen containers, balanced symmetry and classic textures. The result feels like a modern suburban farmhouse—warm and welcoming but not overdone.

I used matching-shaped boxwoods in black urns flanking the doorway, complemented by green-and-white ivy and polka dot plants for contrast. These classic combinations hold up well through spring and into summer: the ivy will eventually trail down the urns and the polka dot plants will thicken, creating a bright, textured spot on our shady porch.

The smaller textured gray pots came from a local home improvement store and were an excellent find. Their tactile surface adds visual interest even before the plants fill out. I planted each of these smaller pots with four impatiens—three fuchsia and one white with a fuchsia center—to encourage a lush, full look quickly.

To celebrate spring I made a DIY seed-packet wreath for the front door. It was surprisingly easy and so much fun to assemble; most of the supplies came from the dollar store, making it an affordable statement piece. For a step-by-step tutorial, look for the garden-themed wreath project on the Worthing Court blog.

The final personal touch was a custom wood plaque I ordered from a small shop. I asked the maker to use the letters HOH—House Of Handgraaf—in place of our long last name, and to include our wedding year, 2005. The plaque adds a handcrafted, meaningful accent to the porch without overwhelming the overall clean aesthetic.

Thanks for stopping by my front porch tour. I can easily picture myself settling into one of the rockers with a tall glass of iced sweet tea and enjoying the view now that everything feels refreshed and inviting.

We’re planning major exterior updates this spring and summer, so by this time next year the entire front of the house could look very different. I’ll be sharing progress and ideas as we go—expect a full reveal when the work is complete.
