Foyer Makeover: Style a Farmhouse Board and Batten Wall

How to Style a Farmhouse Board and Batten Wall

When we began our foyer makeover, my main goal was to brighten a space that felt a little too dark. Painting a board and batten wall white transformed the room immediately, reflecting light and giving the entry a fresh, farmhouse feel. Below I’ll walk through the progression, the decisions I made, and practical styling tips you can use for your own board and batten wall.

This wall started as a blank canvas…

Then we added the board and batten treatment…

And finally, it was caulked, painted, and styled to finish the look.

I always planned to install coat hooks on the left side of the wall, but I struggled with the right side. In the end, practicality won: I added hooks on the right as well so we have plenty of places to hang coats during busy times.

Pookie helped me build the simple benches a few weeks ago; I’ll share that tutorial soon. You may notice the upholstery fabric matches the fabric used on our dining room chairs, which ties the spaces together and reinforces a cohesive farmhouse palette.

All electrical work was completed and new lighting installed. If you look closely at the photos you can probably spot which fixtures I chose for the foyer. Good lighting helps emphasize the crisp white board and batten and brightens the entire entryway.

Styling Tips for a Farmhouse Board and Batten Wall

Here are the practical techniques I used to achieve a warm, farmhouse-inspired entry:

  • Use texture generously — woven baskets, straw hats, and grapevine wreaths add rustic interest and depth against the white panels.
  • Add greenery or dried florals to introduce color and a lived-in, inviting feel year-round.
  • Include metal accents like zinc or galvanized pieces for an authentic farmhouse touch without feeling fussy.
  • Soften the space with fabrics — upholstered benches, seat cushions, and throw pillows bring comfort and balance the harder materials.
  • Display items in unexpected ways using simple black hooks; they’re affordable and create contrast. I use ball-end style hooks for a classic look and reliable function.

The best part: aside from the benches, everything I used came from my existing stash, proving that thoughtful styling and a few key pieces can make a big impact without starting from scratch.

Current To-Do List for the Foyer

Progress so far is reflected below; items crossed out are complete.

  • Caulk and paint the board and batten wall white to match the trim
  • Replace the chandelier, add sconces to either side of the office doorway, and add a matching flush mount in the upstairs hallway
  • Replace the area rug — the current one isn’t holding up well with two dogs
  • Add hooks to the board and batten wall to the left of the office opening
  • Decide what to do on the board and batten wall to the right of the office opening
  • Build (maybe) two benches — one for each side of the office opening
  • Address the large wall that runs up the stairs — a gallery wall is under consideration
  • Decide whether to add sconces on either side of the mirror above the gray chest
  • Add an outlet inside the coat closet (our modem and router live there)
  • Add some form of window treatment to the small window at the bottom of the stairs
  • Replace the smoke detector in the upstairs hallway
  • Add final accessories and finishing touches to complete the look

Styling a board and batten wall is a great opportunity to combine function and farmhouse style. With a neutral painted backdrop, textured accents, strategic lighting, and a few durable, comfortable pieces, an entryway can go from dark and utilitarian to bright, welcoming, and organized.
