Decorating my family room for fall this year felt different. I usually want to pull out every cozy accessory I own, but this season I challenged myself to keep things calm and restrained. The result is a warm, layered look using muted fall tones—terra cotta, wheat, and a soft touch of aqua for contrast.

This year I focused on keeping the season’s styling understated. Instead of bringing out every pumpkin and garland, I used a simple palette—terra cotta, warm wheat tones, and a hint of aqua. Fireplace and Mantel: Simple, Layered Accents

My fireplace and the open shelves in the breakfast area are always the first places I decorate. On the mantel I kept things minimal—three terra cotta jars filled with dried bundles and a pair of wooden candlesticks. Down on the hearth sits a copper pot I recently found; it’s an unexpected focal point that anchors the display.

My coffee table styling involved a little trial and error—especially with a strand of oversized wooden beads I wanted to look casually draped. While I’m still tweaking that look, I’m very happy with a small tray vignette that layers textures: woven basket tray, a candle, and natural accents to echo the color story.

Art and Placement

You might notice the birch tree canvas is no longer above the fireplace. I moved it on a whim and it landed in a cozy corner at one end of the couch where it feels perfectly placed. The round mirror that once sat in that corner now hangs above the mantel, proving that small changes can refresh a room’s look without major purchases.
