I decorated my family room with lots of cozy farmhouse Christmas decor and I can’t wait to share it with you!

This space has always been one of my favorites to decorate—it’s warm, inviting and perfect for holiday gatherings. Over the years I’ve experimented with many looks here, including traditional, whimsical, and neutral palettes. This season I returned to the classic red-and-green color story with an updated farmhouse twist that feels both nostalgic and fresh.
The traditional red-and-green scheme is reinterpreted with farmhouse textures and layers: tartan ribbons, checked patterns, warm wood tones and a mix of old-fashioned and modern ornaments. This combination keeps the room feeling cozy and lived-in rather than overly formal. The result is a holiday space that comforts and delights, making it the perfect backdrop for family time.
The Christmas tree is layered with a variety of ornaments in reds, whites and subtle neutrals. I used tartan plaid ribbon alongside checked ribbon, and added a white pompom garland for texture. A Nordic sweater-style garland—one of my favorite finds this year—adds a cozy, handcrafted look. Mixing patterns and scale is key: larger ribbons create structure and movement while smaller ornaments and garlands provide detail up close.
I wrapped gifts in a lively assortment of red and green wrapping papers, mixing plaids, solids and subtle patterns. A touch of black or charcoal in the mix grounds the palette and gives the wrapping a modern edge. Layering ribbons and twine, adding natural sprigs of greenery or a sprig of faux berries elevates simple packages so they resemble small gifts themselves.
I enjoy surprising guests by displaying gifts in unexpected places around the room. This year, in addition to presents under the tree, I arranged gifts in a basket on the hearth and a galvanized metal tub beside the tree. I also used pre-wrapped photograph boxes with plaid designs stacked on the hearth—these double as decor and practical storage while adding height and visual interest to the vignette.
The mantel and fireplace are the heart of the room. I layered a combination of evergreen sprigs, berry stems and simple signs to create a farmhouse mantel that feels both festive and approachable. Keeping a few classic elements—like candles, simple greenery and a balanced arrangement—helps the mantel read cohesive without feeling cluttered.
Directly across from the fireplace sits our sofa, which needed only a few Christmas touches to complete the room. I added seasonal throw pillows in coordinating plaids and solids and created a cozy coffee table vignette with a Santa figurine, lantern, candles and a tray clustered with ornaments and faux greenery. These small accents bring the holiday spirit to the seating area without overwhelming everyday function.
One of my favorite farmhouse touches is a DIY rustic blanket ladder draped with a mix of plaid throws and a stocking filled with faux greenery and red berries. I built the ladder myself—it’s simple to make and budget-friendly.
