In our beach condo, the galley kitchen is dark, dated, and very small. I need to give it a complete makeover on a tight budget—without replacing the cabinets or appliances for now.

When we bought the beach condo last summer it had been used as a rental for several years. Structurally it was in good shape, but the finishes and decor were outdated and not our style. My goal is to transform this compact galley into a bright, modern farmhouse-inspired kitchen with a subtle beachy feel that reflects the location right outside our door. Because the budget is limited, the plan focuses on cosmetic updates and a few strategic upgrades rather than a full gut remodel.
Viewed from the dining room, you can see the kitchen’s existing layout and finishes. The cabinets are solid and in good condition, so they’ll stay; that’s the best starting point for a budget-friendly renovation.

Appliances are a mix of finishes. Replacing appliances is not in the budget, so I’ll work around what’s already in place and plan to replace items only as they reach the end of their life. The microwave is relatively new and has stainless-steel accents that tie into the range, and the refrigerator should be fine for now. The dishwasher is older and may need replacement later; for now I’m considering painting it to better coordinate with the new design.

Here’s the plan I developed on a mood board to brighten the space and deliver modern farmhouse character without an expensive overhaul. I’m using visual tricks—bright paint, reflective tile, fresh hardware, and a quality countertop—to make the narrow galley feel larger and cleaner. If you want to learn how to create your own mood board, look for resources on mood-board creation to help plan materials and finishes.

1. Paint the cabinets
Painting the existing cabinetry a crisp white will instantly brighten the kitchen and create visual continuity with the rest of the condo’s trim. I’ll use Sherwin Williams Extra White so the cabinets match the base trim color throughout the home. I’ll also paint the old paneling above the cabinets to clean up that visual line and make the ceiling feel higher and more cohesive.

2. Add a backsplash
The kitchen currently lacks a backsplash, and adding one is a high-impact, cost-effective update. I’m using peel-and-stick glass subway tile to add brightness and reflect light down into the workspace. Peel-and-stick options are budget-friendly and easy to install without grouting, which keeps the project manageable for a small DIY-friendly kitchen makeover.

3. Replace the countertops
The biggest investment will be new Luna White granite counters. The existing faux butcher block is worn and shows damage; replacing it with durable, light-reflective granite will instantly elevate the room and tie together the white cabinets and glass tile. Luna White has the right balance of warmth and brightness for a modern farmhouse look while hiding everyday crumbs and wear better than some lighter surfaces.

4. Update the faucet
A simple, modern faucet will replace the old chrome fixture to coordinate with the new stainless sink that will be installed with the countertops. This is a modest, affordable swap that improves both function and style.

5. Replace the cabinet hardware
The current faux-glass knobs are worn and some are loose. Replacing knobs, pulls, and hinges with simple brushed-nickel hardware will modernize the cabinetry without changing the doors. Clean-lined hardware is a small upgrade with a big visual return.
6. Add a decorative hood above the microwave
As an aesthetic enhancement down the road, I plan to add a decorative hood above the microwave. In this narrow galley a projecting hood would be impractical, so the hood will be purely decorative—an architectural focal point that reinforces the farmhouse style without disrupting sightlines or workflow.

Full to-do list for this budget-friendly small kitchen makeover:
Paint walls, trim and ceilingPaint cabinetsReplace old ceramic tile with laminate flooring- Center and replace light fixture
Replace countersAdd a backsplashReplace faucetReplace cabinet hardware- Paint dishwasher to coordinate with new finishes
- Add a decorative hood above the microwave
- Add a roman shade to the window
- Final styling to make the space feel fresh and welcoming
For transparency, I’ve already completed several of these steps and you may have seen glimpses of the progress in the dining room reveal. The kitchen is not fully finished yet, but the transformation is well underway and each change is helping the small space feel brighter, more functional, and much more in line with the modern farmhouse aesthetic I’m aiming for.
