My Colorful Laundry Room Makeover

When we moved into our house it was a builder’s spec model, and nearly every room—including the laundry room—was painted an off-white neutral. While neutrals are lovely and work beautifully for many homes, I knew I wanted color and personality in this space. The result is a small laundry room that combines practical laundry organization with bright, garden-inspired decor.

The entire room was inspired by a print titled “Cynthia’s Garden” by artist William Mangum. That print was the very first Christmas present my husband ever gave me, and I love its color palette and whimsy. The artwork became the anchor for the room’s color choices and decorative accents, and even includes a little bunny that I adore—bunnies are a recurring motif in my home.

Before we began, the laundry area had only a wire shelf above the washer and dryer and an awkward, impractical sink. To improve functionality and storage, my husband replaced the wire shelf with ready-made cabinets from Lowe’s. The cabinets give the space a cleaner look and a lot more enclosed storage for laundry essentials.

On top of the cabinets we placed baskets to hold bulk items like extra paper towels, spare lightbulbs, and napkins. Using baskets is an easy laundry storage solution that keeps supplies accessible yet tidy.
We also replaced the awkward sink with a closer-fitting cabinet and a proper laundry sink. I found a close-out base cabinet at Lowe’s and installed a drop-in laundry sink. My husband raised the sink slightly so washing the dogs and other tasks wouldn’t be so hard on my back—small ergonomic changes like this make a big difference in a laundry room makeover.

From the front, the sink and cabinet look clean and functional. For reference, the outside dimensions of the cabinet are 24″ wide x 24.75″ deep; inside the cabinet measures 21.5″ wide x 19.5″ deep. That size works well for a compact laundry area without sacrificing workspace.

The little bird clock and a fingertip towel add charm and everyday usefulness. The towel holder was a thrifted find, and those kinds of secondhand treasures are perfect for adding personality on a budget.

On the wall opposite the washer and dryer, I arranged a small gallery of garden-themed items to echo the colors and mood of the William Mangum print. I had planned to hang a mirrored window frame but instead used items from my collection and a few thrifted pieces to create a cohesive garden vignette.

The shelf, originally white and found at a thrift store, now displays a small sign that reads “With each thought of you, happiness blooms,” along with decorative pears and little bird figurines. These touches reinforce the garden theme without overwhelming the room.
I also transformed an old mirror with a silver frame into a chalkboard by painting the glass with chalkboard paint and repainting the frame in glossy black. I attached red ribbon to each side and now use a chalk pen to write favorite scriptures or reminders—an attractive and functional focal point that doubles as a message board.

One of the most pragmatic additions is a sturdy aluminum, expanding clothes rack that folds flat against the wall when not in use. It’s not the prettiest option compared to wooden racks, but it carries a lot of wet laundry and tucks away neatly—an important laundry organization idea for smaller spaces.

Finally, I added clear jars for washing powder and clothespins. I cut oval labels from black vinyl and used a chalk pen to write the contents. Clear storage jars are an affordable way to organize supplies while keeping the room visually light and tidy.
This small laundry room makeover balances useful storage and ergonomics with cheerful, garden-inspired decor. If you’re planning a laundry room update, consider pulling color or a theme from a single magazine or artwork to guide your choices, add practical storage like cabinets and baskets, and include a few thrifted or personal pieces to make the space feel like yours.
