Create your own cozy breakfast nook on Christmas day! I will show you how with my own fun holiday decor.
This year I finally knew in advance how I wanted to decorate for Christmas — a rare treat for me. In past years I’ve often improvised at the last minute and ended up in a direction I hadn’t planned, which was fun but spontaneous. This season I found a set of Christmas-inspired plaid dishes on clearance at At Home last summer and they became the inspiration for the whole breakfast nook. The result is a warm, farmhouse-style corner that feels festive without being overdone.

My open rustic shelves are one of the first places I change for each season, and this year they were a perfect canvas for the plaid dishes. I used my KISS decorating approach — keep it simple and stick to a few repeat elements — which made pulling everything together quick and cohesive. The shelves mix practical pieces with a few whimsical accents: red berry topiaries, a primitive snowman, a vintage-style sled, and a cheerful “A Very Merry Christmas” tree added this year from Kirkland’s.

I added a ceramic pig wearing a tiny wreath from New River Pottery, a favorite local shop, and a red lantern from Michael’s to balance the display. Mixing textures — ceramic, metal, wood, and faux greenery — keeps the shelves interesting while maintaining a farmhouse vibe.

One of my happiest finds was a set of plaid Christmas mugs at Hobby Lobby. They practically walked into my cart and have become a daily reminder of the season every time I reach for a cup of coffee. I display them on a mug tree to keep them accessible and to add color to the shelves.

The smaller accents anchor the nook: a tiny lamp wrapped with a boxwood wreath that stays put year-round provides soft light in the evenings, and a candy cane crock I found at Kirkland’s sits ready for seasonal sweets. I used inexpensive photograph boxes from Hobby Lobby as plaid gift boxes in a basket — they look wrapped and make great, budget-friendly presentation pieces.

On the bench I kept things simple and comfortable with a few throw pillows in red and white buffalo check, along with a hot-chocolate themed cushion to add a playful touch. The art above the bench is a framed printable piece I created and placed in a painted frame, which keeps the display personal and budget-friendly.

The kitchen table stays understated so the nook feels welcoming rather than cluttered. I layered a red-striped grainsack runner with a simple centerpiece: a white pitcher filled with faux greenery and a petite Christmas topiary I picked up at Target a few seasons ago, all displayed on a stack of plaid dishes to echo the collection on the shelves. A glass cloche adds a subtle farmhouse touch and elevates the vignette.

Wreaths hung from red-and-white striped ribbons in the bay windows finish the space and bring a bright, festive focal point to the room. The overall palette — red, white, and plaid — keeps the look cohesive and cheerful without feeling busy.

Our Christmas breakfast nook feels inviting and snug this year, and we find ourselves lingering at the table longer, enjoying coffee, conversation, and holiday moments with family and friends. If you’re creating your own holiday nook, try choosing one key pattern or color as your anchor (like plaid), add a few meaningful or whimsical pieces, and keep the rest simple — the KISS approach makes decorating both manageable and joyful.

Merry almost Christmas, everyone! If you need a bit of holiday inspiration for your kitchen or breakfast nook, save these ideas for later and make the season cozy.

Sharing at these great seasonal gatherings and parties.
