After months of planning and a lot of small updates, I’m excited to share the refreshed look of our family room. The refresh was timed perfectly for the Spring Tips and Ideas bloghop — a great opportunity to swap seasonal inspiration with fellow decorators. If you’re joining from The Pickled Rose, welcome — Kristi’s home is always full of approachable DIY and decorating ideas.
If you want to see the room before the update, click here. The original space leaned into a heavy farmhouse theme that I loved for a long time, but I was ready for a lighter, more updated neutral palette with subtle spring accents — still farmhouse-inspired, but fresher and more modern.
The only new furniture purchases were the two recliners that flank the fireplace — a practical buy since my husband’s old leather recliner had seen better days. Finding chairs that balanced comfort and style was essential; for anyone shopping for recliners that don’t look like traditional recliners, I can recommend these. He’s 6’2″ and needed good neck and shoulder support, so comfort mattered as much as the look.

One of the most visible changes is above the fireplace. I removed the large architectural piece that had been there for years and replaced it with a canvas print I loved — a year‑round piece that makes seasonal mantel styling easy. The print came from At Home and I framed it with an open-backed frame from Hobby Lobby that I painted black for contrast.

My current color scheme centers on shades of beige and soft gray, warm wood tones, and whisper white, with touches of blue and plenty of greenery. Accessories — weathered candlesticks from my trip to Magnolia Market, a trio of neutral vases, lanterns, and a basket of greenery on the hearth — all come together to give the fireplace a soft, spring-ready feel without looking overdone.

The layered rug I added helped introduce those palette colors and break up what had felt like a sea of gray. I once considered painting the entertainment center for a lighter look, and eventually decided to do it — the painted finish made a huge difference and softened the room. Read about how we painted it without sanding and the products we used here.

On the opposite wall, I simplified a once‑busy gallery into a clean grouping of watercolor prints and added three sconces for balance and soft lighting. Painting a small side table in my favorite gray tied that corner into the room’s updated palette. Behind the sofa, my DIY sofa table adds needed dimension and prevents the seating from appearing pushed directly against the wall.

One project I’m still planning is refinishing the pine console table. The new mirror above it freshens the area, but the table’s warm yellow‑orange tone needs updating to better suit the softer palette — I’m considering paint or stain options and will share the outcome on my Instagram stories.

The new coffee table is actually a creative makeover of my old table: I painted the base (Annie Sloan French Linen), shortened the legs, and had the top upholstered and tufted by a professional. The upholstered surface adds a tailored, cozy feel while still being practical — and it was more budget‑friendly than buying a large new table.

Overall, the room now feels lighter, more cohesive, and ready for spring gatherings. The refreshed neutral palette, layered textures, and a few well‑chosen furniture updates created an updated farmhouse vibe that’s both comfortable and current.
