A bright and cheerful front porch decorated for spring that will last all the way through the summer.
One of my favorite features of this house is the large, traditional Southern-style front porch that stretches across much of the front façade. Its scale presented a decorating challenge: I wanted the space to feel welcoming and balanced without looking cluttered or bare.
Because this is the largest porch I’ve ever had, it took a few tries to settle on a layout and color scheme that felt right. Over time I experimented with different furniture arrangements, rugs, and plant groupings until the space read as cozy and intentional.
A few years ago we swapped the original mahogany door with an oval glass for a door that has larger glass panes. That change made a dramatic difference in how much light the foyer receives. I’ve shared photos of the original door and house color in earlier posts.
You might wonder why there’s no privacy shade over the big panes. We do most of our living in the back of the house, so the door glass rarely exposes us to passersby—only if we happen to be right at the entrance.
Choosing a paint color for the door was tougher than I expected. I had my heart set on a blue, but the covered porch and the distance from the street made many blues look almost black from outside. In the end I painted the door the same color family as the brick—Sherwin-Williams Network Gray. I used the full-strength color on the door to create a subtle contrast with the brick, which is painted at a slightly reduced intensity.
To modernize the entry, I replaced the traditional urns with tall, square planters. I love the architectural look they add. To avoid filling those large containers with soil, we had my husband cut a few pieces of wood to create a shelf inside each planter. That way I can tuck smaller pots onto the shelf or set decorative elements on top without wasting potting mix.
This year I wanted something different from live plants, so I made decorative orbs inspired by metal garden spheres. Rather than buy the pricey metal versions, I crafted my own by zip-tying two round hanging planters together to form a globe. The orbs sit on a nest of Spanish moss placed on the internal shelf, and each orb holds a full, realistic faux fern with some fronds pulled through the openings for a natural look.
For a door accent I used a hanging basket as a makeshift wreath, filled with a mix of artificial greenery and floral stems. A tall, bendable branch and trailing greenery add height and movement that draw the eye to the entry.
The sunny yellow peonies provide cheerful pops of color and pair nicely with the green foliage and neutral furnishings. Most of the florals and greens came from my craft stash, which makes it easy to refresh the look seasonally without replacing major pieces.
While decorating around the door was straightforward, figuring out the rest of the porch took more time. I ultimately embraced symmetry, creating matching conversation areas at each end of the porch. Using neutral furniture and accents lets me swap in seasonal touches—pillows, throws, and accessories—without redoing the whole setup.
The two seating areas are nearly identical; the only variations are the wall hangings and the benches, which are slightly different styles. I’ve long considered anchoring each area with a small outdoor rug, and this season I finally added black-and-white buffalo check rugs. They add warmth and define the conversation spots, making the porch feel more like an outdoor room.
Even though we have a screened porch out back, my husband and I often sit on the front porch to watch the dogs attempt to chase squirrels—an amusing, if futile, pastime. For a casual side table between the chairs I flipped a large basket upside down; it’s an inexpensive and charming solution.
