Get your dining room into the holiday spirit with a festive red, black, and white Christmas décor scheme.

This is our fourth Christmas in this house, but only the second year I’ve decorated the dining room for the holidays. I waited until I finished the total makeover of the room so the space could tell me what it wanted to be for Christmas. That makes a difference — a room that feels like itself always looks better dressed for the holidays.

Last year my dining room leaned toward neutrals and burnished golds, while most of the rest of the house celebrated classic red and green plaids. I added a touch of red with a Christmas tablescape, but the overall palette stayed subdued and formal. This year I wanted the dining room to feel warmer and more inviting, to better match the cozy vibe of the rest of the house. So I switched gears: out with the neutrals and golds, and in with a cheerful red, black, and white color palette that’s festive without feeling fussy.

The dining room sits at the front of our house and features a full-length bay window, which was always destined to host a Christmas tree. I love the glow and curb appeal from a tree in that window. If you look closely at the photo above you might notice there were no presents under the tree yet — but that’s changed. I’ve been busy shopping and wrapping, and a few gifts now soften the base of the tree and tie the look together.

Coordinating the wrapping paper and ribbon with the ornaments on the tree is an easy trick that gives a polished, designer feel. Sticking to the same color story — red, black, and white — makes the whole vignette feel cohesive and intentional, even when the decorations are a mix of new and vintage pieces.

One of my favorite features in the dining room is the DIY cheater planked wall — it provides the perfect backdrop for a vintage mantel top repurposed as a shelf, the sideboard, and the hanging lanterns I made in a Fixer Upper style. This wall is the first thing you see when entering the dining room from the office, and it sets the tone for the whole space.

Opposite the planked wall sits a small painted chest flanked by two Martha Washington chairs reupholstered in gray-and-white buffalo check to complement the new paint colors used during the room’s makeover. I love the pattern and texture they bring — it’s a cozy contrast to the cleaner lines of the sideboard and the planked wall.

From many angles, one of the best little details is the reflection in the mirror above the chest. Reflections can double the glow of lights and ornaments and make a room feel larger and more magical during the holidays.

I briefly flirted with the idea of a snowflake-themed centerpiece, but living in central North Carolina makes a white Christmas unlikely — I’ve only had two in my lifetime. So instead I created a centerpiece that feels seasonal and cheerful without relying on snow imagery, using simple materials in our red, black, and white palette to keep the table warm and inviting.

Decorating around a clear color story makes holiday styling easier and more impactful. Sticking to three coordinating colors, mixing textures like wood, chalkboard ornaments, ribbon, and metallic accents, and placing lights where they catch mirrors and windows will give any dining room a cozy, inviting holiday glow.

Thank you for stopping by to tour my cozy Christmas dining room. I’m already looking forward to hosting our annual holiday party — filled with family, friends, laughter, and a table full of festive treats. May your holidays be warm and beautifully styled.
