Decorating a front porch doesn’t require elaborate or fussy pieces to be effective. Consistency in color and texture helps create a cohesive look that ties the exterior to the interior. This year, I echoed the reds and sage greens used inside the house and added frosted accents and white touches to give a soft, wintry feel without going overboard.
Year-round I keep a pair of black baskets filled with fresh ivy flanking the front door, and I swap seasonal accents in and out of those planters. For Christmas I placed two 4-foot pre-lit artificial trees into the baskets and dressed them with snowy picks and clusters of red berries. The small trees add height and symmetry while keeping the arrangement low-maintenance and durable in colder weather.
I usually make my own wreaths, and this year’s door wreath evolved from the fall version: I removed the miniature pumpkins, added frosted greenery sprigs and inserted a few red berries among the eucalyptus. A simple bow finishes the look. Handmade wreaths are a quick way to personalize your entry and reinforce the porch’s seasonal theme.
Symmetry plays a big role in this porch design. Each end of the porch features a pair of Adirondack glider chairs and a black bench dressed with neutral cushions. Rather than swapping out bench pillows every season, I drape a wreath—tied with ribbon that matches the bows on the outdoor lights—and add a sherpa-lined throw for a cozy, collected look.
Although I’m a Southern native who enjoys the idea of a light dusting of snow, my husband—raised in snowy Wisconsin—takes a different view. When we do get a beautiful snowfall, I try to coax him outside with blankets and hot cocoa so we can enjoy the quiet stillness together from the gliders. Those simple moments make the porch feel especially peaceful and festive.
