The dining room makeover was a project I loved from start to finish, and one of the things I looked forward to most was decorating it for the seasons. This farmhouse dining room lends itself beautifully to fall accents—warm textures, natural elements, and simple vintage touches. If you enjoy seasonal decorating, this space is a perfect example of how small swaps can make a big impact.
Throughout the room I leaned on my K-I-S-S method of fall decorating. Using that simple approach helped me create a cohesive look without clutter. I focused on a few well-chosen elements and repeated textures and colors to tie everything together.
For the mirror and the plates mounted on the shutters, I used candle rings and twig wreaths to add organic, seasonal details. Wiring a candle ring to a twig wreath created a fuller look for the mirror, and Command Strips held everything securely in place. The result is understated and textural—perfect for a farmhouse dining room where natural materials take center stage.
I love how the mirror reflects the opposite side of the room when photographed at a slight angle. That extra reflection helps brighten the space and adds depth, which is why I kept the mirror above the little chest during the makeover instead of swapping in something flat like a chalkboard. In a naturally darker room, reflections and lighter finishes make a noticeable difference.
The vintage shelf above the sideboard started life as a fireplace mantel. Someone trimmed off the legs and I added hooks to transform it into a practical, character-filled shelf. I often hang baskets from those hooks, but for this fall vignette I kept the display cleaner and filled the shelf with nature-inspired pieces—dried stems, small wreaths, and amber glass for warmth.
I also made a pair of Fixer Upper–style hanging lanterns that double as seasonal displays. They’re ideal for swapping in small accents—this fall I added vintage plates and a few cotton stems for softness. These lanterns provide a little vertical interest above the sideboard and give you a convenient place to change the vignette with each season.
The dining table features a large dough bowl that I leave on the table year-round and refill for each season. For fall, I layered a mix of multi-colored mini pumpkins, wooden orbs, and a few small wreaths to bring in texture and variation. If you’re unsure how to fill a dough bowl, treat it like a small landscape: vary sizes, shapes, and materials to create depth and interest.
Pulling the camera back gives a clearer view of how the elements relate to one another: the beaded chandelier above the table, the wooden sideboard dressed for fall, and the vintage shelf anchoring the wall vignette. Using a consistent palette—soft whites, warm ambers, muted greens, and natural wood—keeps the look unified and relaxed.
