I can’t think of a better way to welcome holiday guests than with a charming, cozy cottage-style front porch decorated in joyful red and white. This year I leaned on those classic colors, with small touches of blue to echo the decor inside the house. Below I’ll walk you through how I put everything together for a warm, inviting entryway that feels festive without being fussy.

CHRISTMAS FRONT DOOR DECOR
The door area is the focal point. For mine I used two layered garlands around the door and sidelights, a door swag instead of a wreath, planters on either side, layered doormats, and lanterns to frame the entry.
My garland starts with an 18-foot pre-lit evergreen base with the branches fanned out, then I layered a decorative garland filled with red poinsettias, snowy pinecones, twig accents, and red-and-white ornaments on top. The contrast between lush green and bright red creates a classic cottage look that reads beautifully at night with the lights on.
If you’re shopping for garland, look for a good-quality pre-lit evergreen for the base and a decorative accent garland to layer over it. Layering garlands adds depth and makes the doorway feel custom and curated.
CHRISTMAS WREATH ALTERNATIVE
Instead of a traditional wreath this year I hung a door swag. It felt more cottage-y and fit the vertical space of our door and sidelights. I strengthened the swag by adding a full bow and hot-gluing extra red berries and trimmed pieces from a long-needle pine spray to make it look fuller and more finished.
FUN & EASY CHRISTMAS PLANTERS
The matching planters on each side of the door were inspired by cute birdhouses I found at Hobby Lobby. They’re simple to assemble and add a whimsical, cottage feel.
To build each planter vignette I started with a plastic insert in the large planter and anchored three birch branches toward the back to act as a backdrop. Gravel keeps the branches steady. Then I added a wooden platform a few inches from the top to support the birdhouse so it won’t sink into the soil. Finally I tucked in greenery, pinecones, and red berries around the birdhouse for a finished look—easy, budget-friendly, and charming.
I finished the entry by layering a “Merry & Bright” doormat over a tartan plaid rug. The plaid rug is an investment I’ll keep using year after year—it helps frame the doorway and makes the space feel complete.
THE REST OF THE COZY COTTAGE CHRISTMAS PORCH
We have a wide Southern-style covered porch, so I decorate each end similarly and swap elements for different seasons. For winter and the holidays I focus on making the space feel cozy—pillows, throw blankets, baskets, small area rugs, and layered accents help define seating areas and make the porch inviting.
We’ve had an unusually mild fall and early winter, which made it a treat to enjoy hot cocoa outside and watch the neighborhood lights at night. Our court is filled with holiday displays, so the porch becomes a front-row seat to all the festive charm in our street.
I mix patterns—plaid, florals, and a few winter-themed pillows—to create a layered, collected look. The blue snowflake pillows were a great budget find, and the tartan plaid pillow covers add that classic cottage warmth throughout the porch and inside the house.
