Christmas in a Farmhouse Kitchen: Rustic Decor and Recipes

I’m excited to share my Christmas decor ideas for our new farmhouse kitchen

Last year at this time our kitchen was in the middle of a complete remodel, so there was very little room for holiday decorating. I was thrilled if I managed to get the tree up and the gifts wrapped. This year, with the renovation finished, I made sure every corner of the farmhouse kitchen received a little Christmas cheer.

Our kitchen is long, with the main cooking area at one end and the breakfast nook at the other. The breakfast area sits in one of two charming turrets on the back of the house, giving us panoramic views of the backyard where deer often pass by. That space has finally been completed—window treatments, DIY rustic shelves over the sideboard, and a new modern light fixture all in place—so this is the first holiday season I’ve been able to show it off.

Because I’m enjoying our first Christmas in the remodeled kitchen so much, I took a lot of photos. Below I’ll walk through how I styled each area, from the cooking zone to the cozy breakfast nook—perfect for anyone looking for farmhouse kitchen ideas for the holidays.

Holiday touches for a farmhouse kitchen

I started the kitchen decor with a garland draped across the vent hood above the cooktop. Small battery-operated lights woven through the greenery add a soft, welcoming sparkle. I also hung petite wreaths on the white cabinet doors, each tied with ribbon to add a classic farmhouse touch.

Everyday counter items were easy to dress up for the season. I incorporated black-and-white checked ribbon throughout the kitchen and scattered small accents of red to brighten the palette. A glass cloche highlights a tiny red church figurine, while a wooden box holds a few pieces of my gold-rimmed Christmas china alongside sentimental cookbooks and a rustic star—an appealing mix of elegant and country.

The island became a seasonal vignette with a compact snowman riding a red sleigh, flanked by snow-dusted miniature trees. Opposite the sink, where the ovens, microwave and pantry live, I set up a hot drink station for the family gathering: a coffee maker sits ready, surrounded by jars of marshmallows, mints and chocolates, plus a container holding pods for coffee and cocoa. It’s a simple way to make guests feel welcome and festive.

Now to the breakfast area. I recently installed rustic shelves above the sideboard and added a glittery “Merry Christmas” banner and a few red accents to tie the space to the rest of the kitchen. At first I wondered whether the banner might be too much, but it has grown on me and brings a joyful focal point to the shelves. I kept most of the natural textures and mixed in a few seasonal ceramics and miniature holiday houses for a cozy, collected look.

On the opposite wall of the breakfast nook I kept a simple bench and a framed printable that I created in a large size and a 9″ x 11″ version. The framed art feels at home with a small wreath above it, and a Noel-themed pillow and a stack of wrapped presents on the bench add to the holiday vignette without overwhelming the space.

Finally, I created a simple yet charming centerpiece for the table using a small evergreen tree, ribbons, candles and a few whimsical touches like a silver chipmunk figurine and a lantern with a candle inside. It’s understated, rustic and perfect for casual holiday meals in our farmhouse kitchen.
