A casual, elegant farmhouse fall dining room — ideas for neutral fall decor using simple elements and an easy tablescape.

My dining room is one of the places I allow myself to be a bit more decorative for the seasons and holidays. For fall this year I wanted a look that felt both elegant and relaxed, leaning toward neutral tones with touches of blue and green inspired by a couple of unexpected sources in my home.

If you’ve seen the rest of my home decorated for fall, you’ll notice I like to keep a consistent seasonal palette that flows from room to room. This year, two things prompted me to shift the dining room slightly away from pure traditional hues. First was a painting above my mantel that introduced soft blues alongside rustic fall tones, giving me permission to introduce cooler accents. Second were the hydrangea bushes that bloomed for the first time in my yard — their subtle blue and green tones turned out to be perfect for a neutral fall palette and begged to be used around the house.

For the table, I started with a natural linen tablecloth that I washed but didn’t press. The relaxed, slightly rumpled texture gives the setting a casual elegance that works well with farmhouse pieces. If you prefer a pressed look, that’s easy to achieve, but I like the softness and lived-in feeling unpressed linen provides for a fall tablescape.

The centerpiece is intentionally simple: two square lanterns down the center of the table with eucalyptus garlands snaking around them. To create a fuller, more textured runner, I layered two garlands and intertwined them — that adds depth without looking overdone. The soft sage-blue of eucalyptus pairs beautifully with the faded blues and greens of the hydrangea blossoms.

My garlands came with small white berries attached, which gave a delicate contrast. If you can’t find a garland with berries, tucking a few white berry sprigs into a leafy garland achieves the same effect and keeps everything looking cohesive and seasonal.

I scattered gray and off-white velvet pumpkins along the garland for texture and a soft, seasonal touch. Velvet pumpkins add an elegant, cozy feel and help tie together the neutral palette with subtle variations in tone.

Table settings are deliberately simple: round woven placemats, everyday dinnerware, and a mix of gray and beige salad plates topped with small pumpkins. This understated approach keeps the focus on texture and natural tones and carries easily through the entire fall season into Thanksgiving.

On the sideboard and a vintage shelf I kept decor minimal. A green pumpkin soup tureen I rediscovered in my fall decorations adds a small pop of color and a bit of vintage charm. It doesn’t match the eucalyptus exactly, but the tone complements the rest of the greens and neutrals and provides visual interest without competing with the centerpiece.

A eucalyptus wreath framed inside a square tobacco basket echoes the table’s garland and ties the whole room together. Simple candlesticks with gray pillar candles add height and warmth without overwhelming the clean, neutral look.

I also tucked a few hydrangea blossoms into baskets attached to my DIY hanging lanterns to continue the theme of soft blues and greens around the room — a subtle way to bring garden blooms into fall decor.

Finally, the star element for me this year is an arrangement of dried hydrangeas displayed on their own. Their muted blues and greens are so beautiful on their own that they deserve a dedicated spot to be admired. I plan to move them to another room to enjoy year-round after fall ends.
