Buffalo Check Christmas Tree and Mantel: Red and White Ornaments, Ribbon, and Plenty of Eucalyptus for a Stunning Holiday Display
Christmas at Worthing Court always feels incomplete without festive red accents. I experimented with an all-neutral palette one year, but my family made it clear that traditional red and green are part of what makes the season feel like Christmas — and I agree. This year I updated the classic palette by pairing red, green, and white with black-and-white buffalo check ornaments and ribbon, plus generous eucalyptus tucked through the tree and garland for a fresh, modern look.

The contrast looks especially striking against the newly painted white entertainment center — the colors really pop and the overall space feels brighter and cleaner.

This tree was the first thing I decorated this season. I didn’t start with a strict plan, but the combination of buffalo check, red and white ornaments, loopy ribbon, and eucalyptus quickly came together into one of my favorite trees to date.

If you want step-by-step designer directions for decorating a tree like this, see the detailed tutorial available on the Worthing Court blog — it walks through placement, layering, and finishing touches so you can replicate the look.
I began by topping the tree with a large red star and surrounding it with eucalyptus picks so the tree crown felt full and textured from the start.

Next, I filled the branches with a mix of extra-large and medium red, white, and buffalo check ornaments. Wide loopy ribbon was woven into the tree for movement, and I finished with eucalyptus and frosted red berry picks sprinkled throughout for a natural, wintry accent.

For the mantel I used two long cedar garlands laid end to end to create a lush, full base. I layered in eucalyptus and the same frosted red berry picks used on the tree to carry the theme across the room.

The mantel was intentionally simpler with no ribbon so the eye could rest from all the buffalo check patterns. Instead, I added two black-and-white buffalo check stockings on one end and balanced the opposite end with decorative lanterns dressed in matching ribbon bows.

Lanterns on the hearth got cheerful bows made from the same ribbons used on the tree. I love how ribbon ties everything together — a small touch that adds big impact.

To balance the fireplace, I placed two smaller trees on the other side. Each got a snowflake ornament topper, red and white ornaments, and a buffalo check garland. Staggering their heights helps them make a bigger visual impression.

The corner becomes a cozy vignette with two matching mini trees, a red throw, a Christmas pillow, and a small tabletop tree. The red throw catches the natural light streaming through the window, making the whole area glow.
