Christmas storage and organization tips and ideas for trees, garlands, wreaths and decor.
Now that the holidays are over, it’s time to pack away the decorations with a plan. Below are practical, time-tested tips and product ideas to help you store Christmas trees, garlands, wreaths, ornaments and seasonal decor so next year’s setup is faster and less stressful.

After spending time creating a festive home, it’s tempting to quickly toss everything into any box and call it done. I’ve done that more times than I care to admit. But a little organization now pays off with huge time savings and fewer headaches next season.
If you prefer to jump straight to the storage solutions, you can skip the tips and browse the product suggestions below.
Before you begin taking decorations down
Take photos of your holiday decor before you pack anything away. Photographs are a simple, effective reference to:
- Recreate the same look next year if you loved it.
- Remind yourself what didn’t work so you don’t repeat it.

Christmas tree storage
Artificial trees are bulky, and if you collect more than one it can be a real storage challenge. The most reliable option I’ve found is tree-specific storage bags. These are designed to protect and compress a tree, and many styles are durable enough to reuse year after year.
Tree storage bags come in upright, rolling and basic zipper styles. Upright bags can make it possible to store a decorated tree without fully disassembling it. Choose a style that fits your storage space and how often you’ll move the tree.
Other practical ways to store trees:
- Fold and cover with a sheet or drop cloth in a closet, attic or shed.
- Hang from heavy-duty hooks mounted in a garage or shed, covered with a cloth for dust protection.

Christmas garland storage
Garlands can be awkward because of their length and shape. I use two main methods:
- Hang garlands from a nail or hook attached to a rafter or beam in the attic. This keeps them untangled and easy to access.
- Store garlands in large tree storage bags. These bags hold a surprising amount and are great for multiple types of decor.
Other useful options:
- Coil garlands and place them in a wreath storage bag.
- Store garlands in a clear plastic tote so you can see contents at a glance.
- Drape garlands over a hanger and cover with a clear plastic dry-cleaning bag for protection.
- Wrap beaded garlands around an empty paper towel tube to keep them tangle-free.

Christmas wreath storage
Wreaths are best stored flat, hung, or supported to keep their shape. Over the years I tried boxes, garbage bags and hanging them on the wall; the best solution was simple: hang wreaths from a dowel rod in the attic or closet.
Hanging wreaths on a dowel saves space and prevents crushing. If dust is a concern, slip each wreath into a clear plastic bag before hanging for protection.

Christmas ornament storage
Storage for ornaments depends on how you like to organize: by color, theme, or by which tree you’ll use them on. Because I usually change tree decor each year, I store non-valuable ornaments in clear bins grouped by color. It makes decorating faster and more flexible.
For fragile or sentimental ornaments, use containers with individual compartments to prevent breakage. Specialized ornament containers with dividers are worth the investment because they protect delicate pieces and are easy to roll or carry to the tree.
Practical ornament storage tips:
- Place large plastic cups upright in a box to act as individual holders for ornaments; create layers with cardboard separators.
- Use egg cartons for tiny items and small decorations.
- Wrap fragile ornaments first in tissue, then in bubble wrap before placing them in compartments.
- If space is tight, look for under-bed ornament storage containers that slide away neatly.

Miscellaneous Christmas storage
Long stems, artificial sprays and seasonal picks fit neatly in tall containers. Rather than folding them into bins where they can tangle or crush, store them upright in inexpensive tall trash cans or laundry hampers so stems remain straight and visible.
Short picks, mini trees and smaller groupings store well in simple zippered tree bags with handles; the handles make the bags easy to pull out and carry. Ribbon scraps can be stacked, rolled and placed into a small clear bin to keep them organized and easy to locate.
Seasonal pillow covers and throws are best stored on skirt hangers or garment hangers to avoid creasing and to make them easy to swap out the next season.

These strategies reduce clutter, protect fragile items, and make decorating next year easier. Whether you have an attic, closet, garage or shed, choose storage solutions that protect your decorations and make them simple to find. A little effort now will save time and frustration when the season returns.
