Below I’ll describe how a single found painting inspired a warm, layered mantel vignette that blends traditional fall color with my neutral farmhouse style.
When I begin seasonal decorating, I always look for a starting point. Sometimes an idea comes quickly; other times I let inspiration find me. This fall, that spark came from my attic: tucked behind other pieces I discovered an oil painting my aunt created in 1984. Her signature and the year in the lower corner made the find feel like a small treasure. The artwork’s warm browns, gold hydrangeas, and muted russet pumpkins provided a perfect color palette to build around.
Because my decor is mostly neutral, I like to layer in traditional fall tones without overwhelming the room. The painting’s soft blues and green-tinged hydrangeas allowed me to echo those hues in other areas of the house—like the foyer—so the palette flows from room to room. Using one art piece as the anchor helped the mantel feel cohesive and intentional rather than overly decorated.
For years I had a large arched wood-and-metal piece mounted above the fireplace, but this season I wanted to change the silhouette to better complement our vaulted family room ceiling. The painting was smaller than needed to stand alone, so I leaned it against a set of DIY faux barn wood boards I made a few years ago. The boards add height and rustic texture, giving the painting a grounded, furnished look while keeping the arrangement easy to update.
I tend to prefer symmetry, but I enjoy the dynamic feel of a well-balanced asymmetric display. On the left of the mantel I placed a large crockery urn to counterbalance the vertical weight of the boards and painting on the right. A few artificial leaf stems in the urn add height and softness while filling the space without becoming fussy. Simple, natural-looking foliage brings movement and seasonal texture to the arrangement.
To finish the mantel I added treasured candlesticks I picked up during a spring visit to Magnolia Market. Their warm patina complements the painting’s tones and enhances the cozy, layered look. On the hearth I placed a woven basket and a few pumpkins in coordinating hues to ground the display and complete the seasonal vignette. These small accents reinforce the fall theme without cluttering the mantel.
One practical advantage of this arrangement is that nothing is permanently installed above the fireplace. The boards and painting are simply leaned into place, which makes it easy to transition the mantel from fall to winter or Christmas. Swapping a few key items—greenery, a strand of lights, or seasonal garlands—will refresh the mantel for the holidays without a complete redesign.
Keeping fall decor simple doesn’t mean it can’t be layered and intentional. Choose one focal piece, repeat colors throughout nearby spaces, and balance texture and height for a mantel that feels thoughtfully styled.
