I decorated the room in an updated traditional style using a classic red and white palette softened with natural wood tones, hoping to inspire ideas you can use in your own home.

From our front porch to the interior, I aim for a cohesive holiday look. Step inside through the foyer and you’ll enter the family room, where the focal point this year is our gorgeous 7.5′ flocked Christmas tree. I replaced a taller, sparse tree for this perfectly shaped, full tree—packed with lights and much easier to decorate.
The color scheme—red, white, and warm wood—grew from a pair of white-washed wood angel wing ornaments I found this year. Those rustic, light wood accents set the tone, so I layered wooden snowflakes, natural wood beads, and warm candlesticks alongside traditional red and white ornaments for a fresh, updated traditional tree.
The mantle sits beside the tree, so I decorated them as a pair to keep the look cohesive. I layered three garlands—plain faux greenery, flocked greenery, and a bushy, natural-colored garland with tiny leaves—to build a lush texture. I then added wood beads, wooden trees and snowflakes, and pops of bright red berries for contrast. The round mirror above the fireplace is trimmed with an asymmetrical garland for a modern twist on a traditional mantel.
On the hearth I kept things simple: a wooden candlestick and two red mercury glass lanterns continue the red and wood story. A small stack of coordinating gifts on one side completes the balance and shows how wrapped presents can serve as seasonal decor.
The long wall with French doors looked a bit bare, so I added a flocked wreath to each door, tied with the same ribbon used on the tree and finished with bright berry sprigs and a small house ornament tucked into the branches. Those wreaths visually anchor the space beside my husband’s chair and bring continuity to the whole room.
The couch and coffee table opposite the fireplace are decorated more simply to avoid overwhelming the room. Behind the sofa I used a DIY riser to create a small vignette with a favorite wooden horse and frosted pine picks, which tie back to the tree and mantel elements.
On the coffee table a large round wood tray becomes an instant holiday centerpiece: cluster candles in varying heights, tuck in frosty faux greenery, and add a few red ornaments for a quick, polished vignette. It’s an easy and fast way to bring seasonal charm to the living area—this kind of vignette can be finished in ten minutes or less.
I keep a stash of simple red round ornaments on hand—they’re incredibly versatile and work everywhere, not just on the tree. A cozy throw and a few holiday pillows complete the couch area and keep the room comfortable and welcoming.
