Hello and welcome to my cheerful Christmas front porch! This year I kept the decorating simple and traditional — lots of holiday red and green that feels warm and nostalgic.
Christmas Porch Tour
I’m delighted to be part of the Christmas Porch Tour again. A talented group of bloggers have shared their ideas for porch decorating this season, and you’ll find their names listed at the end of this post.
From the start I envisioned a porch filled with classic red and green. I used generous amounts of greenery, pretty ribbon, red ornaments, pine cones, and berries — all the elements that bring that timeless Christmas feeling.
My starting point was the garland I made last year. It’s constructed from inexpensive faux greenery garlands wired together, then dressed up with white lights, red berries, and pine cones. The garland frames the front door and creates an inviting entry that sets the tone for the rest of the porch.
The black planter baskets stayed in place from summer, and I left the ivy I had planted there. For Christmas I added a lantern filled with a large red candle and a few sprigs of faux holiday greenery. Those lanterns first made an appearance on my fall porch, and they continue to be a favorite.

Curated items used on this porch include faux garland, oversized lanterns, plaid accessories, a tobacco basket, and vintage-style accents — all easy to mix and match for a welcoming holiday entry.
My non-traditional “wreath” was inspired by a pair of fur-trimmed plaid skates I found while out shopping. I love to use plaid at Christmas, and the skates gave me the idea to create something playful and cozy for the door. The basket is hung from a strong suction cup hook attached to the glass.
To make the holiday “wreath” I placed the tobacco basket on the diagonal, then tied two clumps of pine-branch greenery and the plaid skates to the basket using twine. It’s a super easy project with a big visual impact. For reference, my door is 36″ wide and the tobacco basket measures 24″ square.
This spring we added four Adirondack-style gliders to the porch, though only one made it into the Christmas vignette because we haven’t finished staining them all. They are wonderfully comfortable and perfect for sitting and watching the dogs attempt to chase squirrels in the yard — an exercise in persistence and amusement.
Who doesn’t love a little red wagon at Christmastime? I filled a vintage-style wagon with a “Merry Christmas” pillow and a playful pompom garland for a touch of charm and color at the foot of the steps.
To finish the porch I added a final layer of warmth: large lanterns with candles and red ornaments, plus lengths of garland and plaid bows along the railings on each side of the steps. The garland around the door and on the rails is arranged to draw visitors straight toward the welcoming entrance.
We also proudly display our flag year-round, and it stays on the porch through the holidays. The patriotic red, white, and blue pairs surprisingly well with the traditional Christmas palette and adds a personal touch.
