One of the most satisfying moments is transforming a room and saving money at the same time. I love a good DIY — creating change with my own hands is both practical and rewarding. Below I share some of my favorite projects that deliver a big visual payoff for a modest budget.
I’ll show how you can create affordable artwork, sew designer-looking pillows from small samples, make professional-quality lined draperies with a pleated appearance, refresh a bookcase with a sliding barn door detail, build an upholstered bench to your custom size, and give an old entertainment center a whole new look. Each project is approachable and budget-conscious.
Project 1: Affordable Artwork
When it comes to wall art, thinking beyond expensive originals and framed prints opens up lots of affordable options. Posters, wallpaper samples, and peel-and-stick papers can be cut, matted, and framed to create coordinated, professional-looking artwork at a fraction of the price.
I hunted for months for frames to flank a dining room mirror. When I found the frames, the included art and mats didn’t suit my scheme — the mats were an unpleasant peach and brown. Rather than discard the frames, I painted the mats white and replaced the prints with sections cut from inexpensive posters. By cutting different parts of the same poster, each frame looks like a coordinated set of originals.
In another spot, I thrifted frames and used sections cut from a single roll of peel-and-stick wallpaper to create a trio of matching prints. The result: three fresh, cohesive pieces for under $60 (excluding frames).
Project 2: Designer-Looking Pillows
A little sewing goes a long way. If you can sew a straight seam, you can make beautiful pillows that look designer-made for far less.
The secret to budget-friendly, high-end-looking pillows is fabric samples. Many fabric retailers sell larger samples—sometimes up to 18″ x 18″—that are perfect for pillow fronts. I used a 12″ x 12″ designer sample backed with a coordinating fabric to make a charming accent pillow that blends perfectly with my bench grouping. Samples let you use beautiful designer patterns without buying full yards of costly fabric.
Project 3: DIY Professional-Quality Lined Draperies
Custom draperies can be expensive, but with basic sewing skills you can make flat, lined panels that look polished and hang beautifully. This approach avoids the uneven hems and cheap finishes common in off-the-rack curtains.
The tutorial I use teaches how to sew flat panels that hang from rings and how to create the look of pleats without the added complexity. If you prefer true pleats, pleater tape can be added after construction to achieve a more formal appearance. Labor is free when you DIY, and you control costs by selecting your fabric and lining.
Project 4: A Bookcase Makeover
If you love the cottage or farmhouse look, transforming a dated bookcase can be hugely impactful. For my pair of bookcases, I did more than paint; I added a sliding door element to make them a focal point. The project was largely improvisational, but with a little planning the sliding-door detail and hardware were far easier to execute than I expected. The makeover turned ordinary shelving into a charming, signature piece.
Project 5: Build a Simple Upholstered Bench
You only need basic carpentry skills to build a simple upholstered bench. This is a versatile project because you can customize the bench to any size and choose a finish and upholstery fabric that suit your decor.
The bench base has clean lines so it blends with traditional, modern, or farmhouse interiors depending on paint or stain and fabric choices. You’ll get a durable, custom piece for far less than buying comparable furniture.
Give New Life to an Old Entertainment Center
Large entertainment centers can dominate a room. Ours was an eyesore until we gave it an affordable makeover. Without sanding, we refreshed the finish, made a few structural changes, and updated hardware and shelving to create a bright, modern look that now enhances the whole family room. Small changes can produce a dramatic result.
