Why knowing your home decor style matters

You might wonder how many home decor styles there are or why it matters to define yours. Knowing your style brings several benefits:

  • Your home should reflect who you are. Identifying your design style helps you focus on that unique expression.
  • It gives you a clear starting point when designing and decorating. Without a defined style, it’s hard to know where to begin.
  • Understanding your preferences keeps you focused and prevents you from chasing every passing trend that might not suit you long-term.
  • Recognizing your style is a skill: the more you use it, the easier it becomes to spot what works and what doesn’t—saving you time and money.

Your style is probably a mix

Most people are a blend of styles rather than purely one type. When you take the home decor style quiz, expect overlap—pick the style that contains the most of the traits you’re drawn to. Mixing styles is encouraged; the blend is what makes your home unique.

With that in mind, below are the most well-known styles and the traits that define them. As you read, try to ignore what’s currently in your home—your existing decor may not reflect your true preferences.

Traditional and Updated Traditional

Traditional design is rooted in heritage and classic forms. Pieces often reflect long-standing design traditions, and rooms tend to feel orderly, warm, and balanced. Updated traditional keeps the warmth and symmetry of the classic look but adds fresher patterns, lighter fabrics, and brighter accents for a more modern feel.

  • Emphasis on harmony and order
  • Symmetry and matching furnishings
  • Warm color palettes
  • Vintage or antique furniture
  • Grand accessories and ornate fabrics
  • Updated traditional uses brighter fabrics and modern patterns while keeping classic structure

Modern, Contemporary, Minimalist

Modern, contemporary, and minimalist styles focus on clean lines, simplicity, and functionality. Although some view these styles as cold, thoughtful design can make them feel warm and welcoming without excess ornamentation.

  • Clean, crisp lines and minimal embellishment
  • Neutral color palettes with occasional bold accents
  • Use of natural woods and environmentally friendly materials
  • Geometric patterns in textiles and rugs
  • Modern refers to 20th-century styles; contemporary is more fluid and current
  • Minimalist takes modern further—streamlined, highly functional, and uncluttered

Boho & Eclectic

Boho (bohemian) style tosses the rules aside in favor of layered, eclectic spaces filled with personality. It’s playful, often colorful, and embraces an international, collected-over-time look. Eclectic is a slightly more polished cousin of boho: still layered and diverse, but more intentionally styled.

  • Combines vintage finds, global treasures, and personal souvenirs
  • Layered textures and patterns; “more is more”
  • Eclectic mixes iconic pieces across styles with a curated approach

Industrial

Industrial style borrows from factory and warehouse aesthetics, favoring raw materials and a no-nonsense, often masculine vibe. It celebrates unfinished surfaces and functional furniture.

Coastal

Coastal style evokes relaxed, beachside living: light, airy rooms with natural textures and a palette inspired by the sea and sky. It aims for a breezy, clutter-free atmosphere.

Mid-Century Modern

Mid-century modern draws from the 1950s–1970s and remains popular for its fresh, retro-infused aesthetic. It favors clean lines, functional forms, and distinctive materials.
